AUGUSTA, Maine -- Promoting safe and healthy working conditions for employees involved in the construction of T-Mobile's new call center in Waterville, Maine, is the goal of a newly signed alliance among the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Key Construction Inc. and the state of Maine's Safety Works! consultation program. "OSHA health and safety alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships," said Anthony Lemire, OSHA's acting area director for Maine. "Alliances are an opportunity to provide workers and employers on major projects with the skills and resources to identify and prevent safety and health hazards." Key Construction Inc., Wichita, Kan., is the general contractor for the project. Under the alliance, OSHA, Key Construction, and Safety Works! will work together to develop and deliver training programs, including OSHA's 10- and 30-hour construction courses, to Key's employees and the project's subcontractors. The training and education programs will focus on reducing and preventing employees' exposure to construction hazards, including the industry's four leading causes of injuries: falls, electrical, struck-by and caught in/between hazards. The alliance will also promote and encourage the worksite participation of Key and its subcontractors in OSHA's cooperative programs such as the Voluntary Protection Program, safety consultation and the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP). Signing the alliance were Lemire; Nathan McCune, assistant project manager, Key Construction; and David E. Wacker, director, Workplace Safety and Health Division, Maine Department of Labor.
