Highlights Diverse Workforce, Focus on Reducing Strains, and Slips, Trips and Falls WASHINGTON -- The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Associated Landscape Contractors of America (ALCA) joined forces today to further the safety and health of workers in large and small landscape businesses. The Alliance unites ALCA and OSHA on efforts to provide all workers in the landscaping industry, focusing on youth and non-English speaking workers, with information and guidance that will help foster a safer work environment throughout the industry. The Alliance will focus on reducing injuries and illnesses associated with manual material handling, amputations, motor vehicle crashes, and slip and trip injuries. "This Alliance is an example of how we are striving to reduce injuries in specific industries where the injury and illness rates are too high," said OSHA Administrator John Henshaw. "Landscaping is one of seven industries in which we're focusing considerable resources to drastically reduce those rates. Together, OSHA and ALCA can make a positive difference for the lives of thousands of landscape workers and the businesses that employ them." "ALCA is dedicated to cooperatively working with OSHA and salutes their willingness to partner with industry," added Debra Holder, ALCA's Chief Executive Officer. "The Alliance will help to further our joint objective of improving safety in the landscape industry through enhanced communication about safety issues, development of safety programs, and an ongoing dialogue and commitment to work together." ALCA and OSHA will develop and deliver safety training programs for a diverse workforce, using appropriate language, media and delivery methods. Also, individuals who are bilingual and have knowledge of the landscaping industry will be identified and trained to teach the courses. The Alliance is designed to provide industry workers with information and guidance that will help them reduce injuries caused by the following: strains resulting from manual material handling; amputations; motor vehicle crashes; and slips, trips and falls. To reach that goal, both OSHA and ALCA will disseminate information through various media, including their respective websites and the creation of electronic assistance tools. Both organizations will also participate together in forums and speak or appear at various conferences, such as the Landscape Industry Conference & Green Industry Expo. A team of OSHA and ALCA representatives will meet at least quarterly to track and share information on activities and results in achieving the goals of the Alliance. ALCA represents approximately 2,500 professional exterior and interior landscape maintenance, installation, and design/build contracting firms and suppliers nationwide.
