Efforts will focus on bloodborne disease and bioterrorism, patient-handling hazards WASHINGTON -- The healthcare industry is set to benefit from an Alliance formed today between the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Association of Occupational Health Professionals (AOHP). OSHA Administrator John Henshaw signed the agreement saying the Alliance validates the significance of a collaborative relationship with one goal in mind -- worker safety and health. Said Henshaw: "We look forward to tapping the collective expertise of more than 1,100 health care professionals who want to work with us to assure that workers throughout the healthcare industry enjoy safe and healthful work environments. AOHP members are strong advocates for occupational safety and health, and we welcome this valuable relationship." "AOHP, as the leading national advocate for occupational health and safety in healthcare settings, is excited to have the opportunity to collaborate with OSHA to enhance and promote the health and safety of workers in healthcare," added AOHP President Emeritus MaryAnn Gruden, RN, CRNP. "With our combined efforts, we look forward to making a significant difference in the safety of healthcare workers." Focus of the Alliance is to provide AOHP members and others with information, guidance and access to training resources that can help reduce and prevent exposure to hazards associated with patient-handling, bloodborne diseases and bioterrorism, and to address implementation issues in healthcare facilities. Key to the Alliance is the development of workplace safety and health curricula for training and education programs on patient handling, and bloodborne pathogens for healthcare institutions and workers. OSHA and AOHP plan on seeking opportunities to jointly develop and distribute information at conferences, events, and through media outlets, including their individual web sites. Additionally, both organizations will provide speakers and exhibits for conferences and other events to promote safety and health throughout the healthcare industry. Additionally, personnel from OSHA and industry safety and health professionals will cross-train in AOHP's best practices or effective approaches, as jointly determined by both organizations. AOHP and OSHA will also develop and disseminate case studies illustrating the business value of safety and health. Joint participation in forums and roundtable discussions on healthcare workplace safety and health issues rounds out the Alliance goals. AOHP's five regional offices and 26 local chapters promote educational and professional growth opportunities for its members and the protection and well-being of all healthcare workers through occupational health education and networking opportunities, health and safety advancement through best practice and research, and partnering with employers, regulatory agencies and related associations.
