Workplace vehicle safety, ergonomics are key elements to the agreement WASHINGTON -- Ensuring a safer workplace in the automotive industry is the goal of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's latest Alliance, signed today. The Coordinating Committee For Automotive Repair (CCAR) formalized an Alliance with OSHA to address worker safety and health issues. The Alliance not only highlights workplace vehicle safety, but will also focus on abrasive wheel machinery (including associated silica hazards), and ergonomics. "The signing of this Alliance provides us with a tremendous opportunity to reduce workplace injuries and illnesses in the automotive industry," said OSHA Administrator John Henshaw. "CCAR brings a wealth of expertise and knowledge that will help us ensure greater protection for thousands of workers in this industry. We're looking forward to getting started." "Guidance and training are key parts in protecting an employee's health and safety in the automotive industry," added Sean M. Ochester, CCAR's Information Officer for Safety and Pollution Prevention. "We're proud to be working with OSHA to ensure that the industry is armed with the best tools and knowledge to prevent injury on the job, and we look forward to a long and productive association." The Alliance provides CCAR affiliates and others in the automotive industry with information, guidance, and access to training resources that will further safety and health for industry workers. OSHA and CCAR plan to develop electronic assistance tools on vehicle safety and will also develop and disseminate information through both print and electronic media and from the organization's respective websites. Cross-training OSHA personnel and industry safety and health professionals, based on CCAR successful practices or effective approaches, is another key to the Alliance. The Alliance also provides a means for OSHA and CCAR to develop and disseminate case studies on the issues highlighted by the agreement, illustrating the business value of safety and health. Both organizations will pursue opportunities to speak, exhibit, or appear at conferences and other industry-related events such as the International Autobody Congress and Exposition and the Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair. OSHA and CCAR will also participate in forums, roundtable discussions, and stakeholder meetings on issues related to the industry. Established in 1994, CCAR represents all segments of the automotive industry. The Committee works with industry around the world, with career and technical schools, and with governments and other organizations to provide best practice safety and health information and training for all who repair or maintain vehicles as a profession.
