Contractor, Federal Government Pledge to Make I-74 Construction Project Safe for Workers

PEORIA, Ill. -- Workers employed over the next four years on the Interstate 74 construction project can expect a dedication to on-the-job safety as outlined in a partnership signed by prime contractor Walsh Construction, Peoria, and the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration, OSHA announced today.

OSHA Health and Safety partnerships are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative initiatives with trade associations, labor organizations and employers.

"Construction on Interstate 74 will occur through the center of Peoria and will be one of the area's major projects over the next four years," said OSHA Area Director Peggy Zweber, Peoria. "Walsh Construction has taken a proactive step in partnering with OSHA to ensure the safety and health of its employees for the duration of this important and extensive work. Our joint objective is to use effective controls to eliminate hazards."

The Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration is dedicated to saving lives, preventing injuries and illnesses, and protecting the health and safety of America's workers. Since 2001, OSHA has created into more than 80 partnerships to prevent accidents and promote job health and safety.
