Chavez Phone: (617) 565-2075 OSHA Announces Alliance to Improve Safety for City Health Care Workers NEW YORK -- "Improving workplace safety and health for healthcare workers is the goal of a newly established alliance among the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the New York State On-Site Consultation Program and the Greater New York Health Care Facilities Association (GNYHCFA). "This alliance is an example of Secretary Elaine L. Chao's commitment to find cooperative ways to improve health and safety for all workers," said Patricia K. Clark, OSHA's regional administrator in New York. "Its focus is on protecting health care workers from the hazards they encounter in long term care facilities." Six OSHA area offices will take part in the alliance: Albany, Avenel, Bayside, Long Island, Manhattan and Tarrytown. More than 82 long-term care facilities make up GNYHCFA's membership and together they employ over 10,000 health care workers throughout the five boroughs in New York City. Through this agreement, OSHA and GNYHCFA will develop workplace safety and health "Best Practices Guides", and provide members and others in the industry with information, guidance, training and access to resources that will protect employees' health and safety. The alliance is expected to focus on reducing and preventing exposures to workplace violence and ergonomic injuries encountered in long-term care facilities. The New York State On-Site Consultation Program will provide free services to association members to help them improve safety and health in their workplaces. Alliance members will meet on a regular schedule to share information on activities and results in achieving the goals of the alliance. The alliance will remain in effect for two years. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is dedicated to saving lives, preventing injuries and illnesses, and protecting America's workers.
