Chavez Office: (617) 565-2075 Second Safety Partnership Launched At 731 Lexington Construction Site NEW YORK -- Improving safety and health for construction workers at the 731 Lexington Ave. project in Manhattan is the goal of a new partnership between the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Building and Construction Trades Council, the contractor Structure Tone, Inc., and the New York State Department of Labor's On-Site Consultation Program. The new partnership is the second such agreement at the site. The first was signed in 2002 with Bovis Lend Lease, the project's structural general contractor. OSHA health and safety partnerships are part of Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative initiatives. "By becoming partners with OSHA, management and labor are demonstrating their strong commitment to safety and health during this project's 18-month duration," said Richard Mendelson, OSHA's area director in Manhattan. Structure Tone, Inc., will oversee some 75 subcontractors with approximately 1000 workers, Mendelson said. Structure Tone, Inc. is the general contractor for the office fit-out and interior construction activities at the site, which will consist of retail, office and residential space. Structure Tone's work on the project began in November of 2003 and is expected to be completed in early 2005. Partnership signatories included Mendelson and OSHA Regional Administrator Patricia Clark for OSHA, Lawrence Petretti, Senior Vice President and Robert DeRespino, Corporate Safety Director for Structure Tone, Inc., Ed Malloy signed for the Building and Construction Trades Council and James Rush for the New York State Department of Labor On-Site Consultation Program. Since OSHA's Strategic Partnership Program began in 1998, more than 300 partnerships have been formed to foster safety and health among over 13,000 employers and 573,000 workers across the United States.
