Construction Project Leads to Over $69,000 in Fines for Six Contractors NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Exposing construction workers to falls and other hazards at a Brooklyn condominium construction project has led to a total of $69,225 in fines against six New York contractors, reports the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration. "The Department of Labor ensures workers are protected with a safe and healthy workplace and this must be a priority of employers. Construction is highly hazardous work, so protections must be in place to protect workers so that injury or death from falls is prevented," said Richard Mendelson, OSHA's Manhattan area director. "That's why it is imperative for employers to ensure that effective worker safeguards are in place and in use on every jobsite where fall hazards are present." OSHA initiated its inspection of the Oceania Condominium project, 3205 Coney Island Ave., on Jan. 15, after employees were observed working without fall protection at heights of up to 80 feet, explained Mendelson. As a result, six contractors were cited for violations of the Occupational Safety and Health Act. The largest fine, $45,987, went to Daurio and Russo and Sons Construction, Co., Inc., a Brooklyn-based concrete contractor. The company was issued a willful citation for failing to provide fall protection for employees working at the building's edge. Ten serious citations were issued for no fall protection training, no hardhats, improper LPG storage, missing handrails, an unguarded stair landing, improper ladder use, uncapped rebar, no shoring plan for concrete pouring, an unguarded floor hole and electrical safety violations. Island International Industries, Inc., of Calverton, a construction company specializing in the erection of prefabricated walls and insulation, was fined $9,500 for two serious citations for missing stairrails and unguarded floor holes. Brighton Construction, a Queens construction management and development corporation, was fined $5,250 for two serious and three other-than-serious citations encompassing lack of fall protection training, uncapped rebar, missing stair rails and unguarded stair landing unguarded floor holes and improper LPG storage. Bass Plumbing and Heating Corp., a Queens plumbing contractor, was issued three serious citations, with $4,875 in fines, for no fall protection for employees working near the building's edge, no fall protection training and no fork truck training. Linear Contracting Co., a Staten Island carpentry contractor, was fined $2,250 for two serious citations for no fall protection and no fall protection training; and Michael Ferrante Construction Co., a Staten Island-based mason and stone contractor, was issued two serious citations with $1,350 in fines for no written hazard communication plan and training and no eye protection.
