U.S.-India Agreement on Nuclear Energy
Secretary Rice (Oct. 2): "[I]t is indeed an historic agreement. It is an agreement that cements an effort that we have been making for some time to bring together the world's largest democracy with the world's oldest continuous democracy. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice traveled to India and Kazakhstan on October 3-5. In India, she met with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, External Affairs Minister Mukherjee, opposition leader LK Advani, and other Indian leaders. They discussed a wide range of issues, including the U.S.-India Civil Nuclear Cooperation Initiative, trade, counter-terrorism, human rights, religious freedom, and education.
In Kazakhstan, Secretary Rice met with President Nazarbayev Prime Minister Masimov, Foreign Minister Tazhin, and other government officials. She discussed various aspects of the U.S.-Kazakhstan strategic partnership, including security and energy cooperation, Kazakhstan’s role as a regional leader, and its efforts to implement further political and economic reforms.
