About Criminal Division Gang Squad

The Criminal Division’s Gang Squad is a specialized group of federal prosecutors charged with developing and implementing strategies to attack the most significant national and transnational gangs operating in the United States. These prosecutors not only prosecute select gang cases of national importance, they also formulate policy, assist and coordinate with local United States Attorney’s Offices (USAOs) on legal issues and multi-district cases, and work with numerous domestic and foreign law enforcement agencies to construct effective and coordinated prevention and enforcement strategies. The Gang Squad is led by an experienced federal prosecutor within the Department of Justice’s Criminal Division (DOJ-CRM) and Gang Squad attorneys work closely with analysts located at the National Gang Intelligence Center (NGIC), and with law enforcement agents located at the Gang Targeting, Enforcement and Coordination Center (Gang TECC) in a collective effort designed to target and dismantle the most serious gang related threats nationwide.

The mission of NGIC is to support law enforcement agencies through timely and accurate information sharing and strategic/tactical analysis of federal, state and local law enforcement intelligence, focusing on the growth, migration, criminal activity, and association of gangs that pose a significant threat to communities throughout the United States. The NGIC has established partnerships with other federal, state and local law enforcement agencies based upon the sharing of gang-related information.

The mission of Gang TECC is to serve as a critical catalyst in a unified, federal and state effort to disrupt and dismantle the most violent criminal gangs currently operating in the United States as they implicate national security, border protection and public safety issues. Through the collaborative and collective efforts of the participating agencies, Gang TECC will accomplish its mission by:

  • Assisting in the initiation of gang-related investigations and enhancing existing investigations and prosecutions.
  • Aiding in the coordination, deconfliction, and effectiveness of gang-related initiatives, investigations and prosecutions.
  • Developing an enhanced understanding of our national gang problem and proposing strategies designed to neutralize the most violent and significant threats.
  • Coordinating with and supporting the NGIC, NDIC and Gang Squad.

The Gang Squad in conjunction with NGIC and Gang TECC are designed to provide a coordinated federal response to the national problem of gang violence.
