John Sherman
Secretary of State, 
Term of Appointment: 03/06/1897 to 04/27/1898

  • Born in Lancaster, Ohio on May 10, 1823;
  • Attended a local academy;
  • Admitted to the bar in 1844 and practiced in Mansfield, Ohio;
  • Married Margaret Sarah Cecilia Stewart in 1848;
  • Delegate to the Whig National Conventions of 1848 and 1852;
  • Moved to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1853;
  • Chairman of the first Republican convention in Ohio in 1855 and participated in the organization of the national Republican Party; was a Representative from Ohio, 1855-1861;
  • Senator from Ohio 1861-1877;
  • Secretary of the Treasury in President Hayes' Cabinet 1877-1881;
  • Again a Senator from Ohio 1881-1897;
  • An authority on matters of Federal finance;
  • Unsuccessful candidate for the Republican presidential nomination in 1880, in 1884, and again in 1888;
  • Secretary of State in President McKinley's Cabinet from March 6, 1897, until April 27, 1898;
  • As Secretary of State, supported the American interpretation of most-favored-nation treatment in matters relating to international trade;
  • Retired from public life;
  • Died in Washington, DC, October 22, 1900.
