Robert Bacon
Secretary of State, 
Term of Appointment: 01/27/1909 to 03/05/1909

  • Born in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, July 5, 1860;
  • Graduated from Harvard University in 1880;
  • After a trip around the world, commenced a business career with Lee, Higginson & Company of Boston in 1881;
  • Married Martha Waldron Cowdin in 1883;
  • Member of the firm of E. Rollins Morse & Brother of Boston, 1883-1894;
  • Member of the New York firm of J. P. Morgan & Company, 1894-1903;
  • Assistant Secretary of State 1905-1909 and Acting Secretary while Elihu Root was in South America in 1906;
  • Secretary of State in President Roosevelt's Cabinet from January 27, 1909, and served until March 5, 1909;
  • As Secretary of State, obtained the advice and consent of the Senate to the canal treaties of 1909 with Colombia and Panama;
  • Ambassador to France, 1909-1912;
  • Became a Fellow of Harvard in 1912;
  • Made a journey to South America at the request of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in 1913;
  • Went to France in August 1914 and helped with the work of the "American Ambulance";
  • Commissioned a major and detailed to General Pershing's staff in 1917;
  • Promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1918 and served as Chief of the American Military Mission at British General Headquarters;
  • Died in New York City on May 29, 1919.
