Travels
- Born in New York City on September 21, 1867;
- Graduated from Yale University in 1888;
- Attended Harvard University (A.M. 1889) and Harvard Law School 1889-1890;
- Admitted to the bar in 1891 and practiced in New York City;
- Married Mabel Wellington White in 1893;
- United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, 1906-1909;
- Secretary of War in President Taft's Cabinet, 1911-1913;
- Delegate at large to the New York State Constitutional Convention of 1915;
- Served in the United States Army in France from 1917-1918, attaining the rank of colonel;
- Practiced law in New York City; was a special representative of the President to Nicaragua in 1927;
- Governor General of the Philippine Islands, 1927-1929;
- Secretary of State in President Hoover's Cabinet from March 28, 1929, until March 4, 1933;
- As Secretary of State, was chairman of the American delegation to the London Naval Conference in 1930, and formulated the Stimson Doctrine with regard to Japanese activities in China;
- Resumed the practice of law in New York City;
- Secretary of War in the Cabinets of Presidents Roosevelt and Truman 1940-1945; retired from public life;
- Died at "Highhold", his estate in West Hills, Huntington Township, Long Island, October 20, 1950.
