Travels

  • Born in Pickett County, Tennessee, October 2, 1871;
  • Attended National Normal University, Lebanon, Ohio, 1889-1890;
  • Delegate to the Tennessee Democratic Convention in 1890;
  • Graduated from Cumberland University Law School in 1891;
  • Admitted to the bar the same year and practiced in Celina, Tennessee;
  • Member of the State House of Representatives, 1893-1897;
  • Served in Cuba as captain, Fourth Regiment, Tennessee Volunteer Infantry;
  • In 1898 resumed the practice of law;
  • Judge of the Fifth Judicial Circuit of Tennessee, 1903-1907;
  • Representative from Tennessee 1907-1921 and 1923-1931;
  • Married Rose Frances (Witz) Whitney in 1917;
  • Chairman of the Democratic National Committee, 1921-1924;
  • Senator from Tennessee 1931-1933;
  • Commissioned Secretary of State in President Roosevelt's Cabinet March 4, 1933 and served until November 30, 1944;
  • As Secretary of State, sponsored a reciprocal-trade program;
  • Chairman of American delegations to numerous international conferences,
  • United States delegate to the Moscow Conference in 1943;
  • Appointed a delegate to the United Nations Conference at San Francisco in 1945;
  • Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1945
  • Retired from public life;
  • Died at the Naval Hospital, Bethesda, Maryland, July 23, 1955.
