- Born in Chicago, Illinois on October 22, 1900;
- Attended the University of Virginia 1919-1924;
- Married Virginia Gordon Wallace in 1926;
- Associated with General Motors Corporation 1926-1934, becoming a vice president in 1931;
- Associated with United States Steel Corporation 1934-1940, becoming chairman of the board of directors in 1938;
- Chairman of the War Resources Board in 1939;
- Member of the Advisory Committee to the Council of National Defense in 1940;
- Chairman of the Priorities Board and director of the Priorities Division of the Office of Production Management in 1941;
- Lend-Lease Administrator, special assistant to the President, and a member of the Canadian-American Joint Defense Production Committee 1941-1943;
- Member of the Board of Economic Warfare 1942-1943;
- Under Secretary of State 1943-1944;
- Secretary of State in President Roosevelt's Cabinet from December 1, 1944, continued in office under President Truman, and served until June 27, 1945;
- As Secretary of State, accompanied President Roosevelt to the Yalta Conference in 1945, and was chairman of the United States delegation to the United Nations Conference at San Francisco the same year;
- United States representative to the United Nations, 1945-1946;
- Rector of the University of Virginia 1946-1949;
- Died in Greenwich, Connecticut, October 31, 1949.
