- Attended public schools; was an official court reporter, 1900-1908;
- Admitted to the bar in 1903 and practiced in Aiken, South Carolina;
- Editor of the Aiken Journal and Review, 1903-1907;
- Married Maude Perkins Busch in 1906;
- Solicitor for the Second Circuit of the State, 1908-1910;
- Representative from South Carolina, 1911-1925;
- Delegate to all the Democratic National Conventions from 1920 to 1940;
- Practiced law in Spartanburg, South Carolina, 1925-1931;
- Senator from South Carolina, 1931-1941;
- Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court, 1941-1942;
- Director of the Office of Economic Stabilization, 1942-1943;
- Director of the Office of War Mobilization and Reconversion, 1943-1945;
- Accompanied President Roosevelt to the Yalta Conference in 1945;
- Secretary of State in President Truman's Cabinet from July 3, 1945 until January 21, 1947;
- As Secretary of State, accompanied President Truman to the Potsdam Conference in 1945, was United States member of the Council of Foreign Ministers at London in 1945 and at Paris and at New York City in 1946, and represented the United States at the Paris Peace Conference in 1946;
- Practiced law in Washington, DC, 1947-1950;
- Governor of South Carolina, 1951-1955;
- Died in 1972.
