Travels

  • Born in Norfolk, New York on June 23, 1913;
  • Graduated from Colgate University in 1934 and earned a law degree from Cornell University in 1937;
  • Married Adele Langston in 1936;
  • Assistant District Attorney of New York County 1938-1942 and 1946-1947;
  • Served in U.S. Navy from 1942-1946;
  • Counsel and chief counsel to the U.S. Senate Special Committee to Investigate the National Defense Program, 1947-1948;
  • Chief counsel to the Senate Investigations Subcommittee of the Executive Expenditures Committee, 1948-1950;
  • Practiced law from 1950-1953;
  • Deputy Attorney General, 1953-1957;
  • Attorney General, 1957-1961;
  • Served as member of the U.S. delegation to the U.N. 20th General Assembly in 1965;
  • Member of the President's National Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Justice 1965-1967;
  • U.S. representative to the United Nations in 1967;
  • Secretary of State in President Nixon's Cabinet from January 22, 1969 and served until September 3, 1973;
  • Promoted a cease-fire in the Middle East in 1970 which lasted until the 1973 war;
  • Dealt with problems of security and cooperation in Europe;
  • Signed the Vietnam peace agreement;
  • Returned to the practice of law;
  • Received the Presidential Medal of Freedom October 15, 1973.
  • Died in 2001.
