Deputy Secretary of State John D. NegroponteThe Deputy Secretary, John Negroponte serves as the principal deputy, adviser, and alter ego to the Secretary of State; serves as Acting Secretary of State in the Secretary's absence; and assists the Secretary in the formulation and conduct of U.S. foreign policy and in giving general supervision and direction to all elements of the Department. Specific duties and supervisory responsibilities have varied over time.

Growing Relationship With Cambodia

"The United States and Cambodia have a good and growing relationship. We are working together to improve the lives of Cambodians. The first Peace Corps volunteers recently marked their one-year anniversary. Travel to Azerbaijan and Iraq
The Deputy Secretary visited Baku, Azerbaijan October 1-3. He met with government, business and international organization leaders and discuss a full range of bilateral and regional issues.  He then traveled to Iraq  for meetings with Iraqi officials including  Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.
