U.S.-India Civil Nuclear Cooperation Initiative – Bilateral Agreement on Peaceful Nuclear Cooperation

2008/863

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Indian External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee realized a historic milestone in the U.S.-India strategic relationship today by signing an Agreement for Cooperation Concerning Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy, also known as the 123 Agreement. The Agreement establishes the legal framework for the United States to engage in civil nuclear cooperation with India. Entry into force of this agreement will open the door for U.S. firms to participate in India’s civil nuclear energy sector, which is projected to expand dramatically in the coming years.
