FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE USP WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 30, 1995 (202) 616-2765 TDD (202) 514-1888 USPC OFFERS BLANKET COVERAGE FOR PAROLE VIOLATION WARRANTS WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The U.S. Parole Commission will initiate 24-hour, seven-days-a-week service on September 15 to issue warrants for parole violations, Chairman Edward F. Reilly announced today. "This new policy will enable the Commission to respond immediately to requests by United States probation officers for warrants and will enhance public safety by promptly removing parole violators from the streets," Reilly said. Under the old system, such service was available only during the normal 40-hour work week. The new policy was adopted unanimously by the Parole Commission. "The U.S. Parole Commission is well aware of the importance of a parolee meeting every condition of parole," Reilly said. "This new policy will ensure that immediate action may be taken when the U.S. Parole Commission is notified that an individual has violated the conditions of his or her parole." Although parole for federal offenders is being phased out, more than 18,000 offenders who committed their offenses prior to November 1, 1987, remain under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Parole Commission. By law, the U.S. Parole Commission may issue warrants for the arrest of those on parole for violation of the individual's conditions of parole. In fiscal 1994, the Parole Commission issued 2,968 warrants for parole violations. ##### 95-461
