Between July of 2005 and June of 2006, Edwin Andres Pena allegedly hacked into the computer systems of dozens of telecommunications companies throughout the world. By doing this, Pena was able to fraudulently route thousands of voice-over-internet-protocol (VOIP) calls through these companies for his own profit. The victim companies were charged for forwarding the fraudulent calls initiated by Pena or for terminating the calls at their final destination, but these same companies were unable to collect proceeds from this traffic because the calls were sent from network devices that had also allegedly been hacked by Pena. Therefore, the telecommunications companies did not know who to charge. Over the course of eleven months, Pena profited over one million dollars from this scheme and caused losses to the victim companies in excess of 1.5 million dollars.
Pena was charged with wire fraud and computer intrusion and was arrested in Miami, Florida, on June 6, 2006. He was subsequently released on bond and is known to have fled the United States around August 10, 2006. A federal warrant for his arrest was issued on August 14, 2006, in the United States District Court, District of New Jersey, Newark, New Jersey, and he was charged with violating the conditions of his pretrial release. An Interpol Red Notice has also been issued for Pena.
