U.S. Marshals Capture Cleveland County Escapee Chavis Hargro in Pennsylvania

Deputy United States Marshals from the Western District of North Carolina and the United States Marshals sponsored Western Pennsylvania Fugitive Task Force combined their efforts to capture Cleveland County escapee Chavis Leon Hargro at approximately 7:45 a.m. on July 16, 2008.

Chavis Leon Hargro, 28, was indicted on June 4, 2008 in the Western District of North Carolina for his alleged involvement in a cocaine conspiracy. On June 9, 2008, the Shelby Police Department arrested Hargro in Cleveland County, N.C. and transported him to the Cleveland County Magistrate’s Office. Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office video surveillance showed Hargro sitting outside of the magistrate’s office unattended for several minutes. Shortly thereafter, a handcuffed Hargro was seen running out of an entrance and through a parking lot. Hargro managed to elude apprehension despite a massive manhunt involving several law enforcement agencies.

Chavis Leon Hargro previously attempted to escape custody in 2000 from the Cleveland County Magistrate’s Office. During Hargro’s escape attempt, a Shelby Police Officer was shot.

On July 3, 2008, the Shelby Police Department requested assistance from the United States Marshals in the Western District of North Carolina in apprehending Chavis Hargro. Information provided by the Shelby Police Department and investigative leads generated by the U.S. Marshals led authorities to believe Hargro had fled to West Mifflin, Pennsylvania.

On July 16, 2008, Deputy United States Marshals from the Western District of North Carolina and members of the United States Marshals Western Pennsylvania Fugitive Task Force tracked Hargro to an address at 519 B Drive, West Mifflin, Pennsylvania. Hargro was arrested without incident at approximately 7:45 a.m.

Western District of North Carolina United States Marshal Patrick C. Smith stated, “The arrest of Chavis Hargro exemplifies the effectiveness of our task force efforts with our state and local partners nationwide.”

Chavis Leon Hargro was taken in custody to the United States Courthouse in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he is expected to go before Federal Magistrate Judge Amy Hay for his initial appearance at 3:00 p.m. today.
