MIAMI, OK – U.S. Marshals, together with
state and local law enforcement authorities, arrested Russell Lee
Overlin (52) at a Miami, OK motel early this evening. Overlin is
wanted by Polk county authorities for questioning regarding the
homicides of his father Gilbert Overlin and step-mother Naomi
Overlin whose bodies were found at the bottom of a cistern outside
the couple’s rural Mitchellville, IA home on February 1, 2007.
Acting on a tip called in to the Iowa
Division of Criminal Investigation this afternoon, U.S. Marshals in
Des Moines developed additional information leading the search for
Overlin to the Miami, OK area. U.S. Marshals, the Oklahoma Highway
Patrol, and officers from the Tulsa and Miami, OK Police Departments
joined the search and located Overlin’s red 1995 Chevy Tahoe outside
a Miami motel room. Authorities set up surveillance of the vehicle
and motel. At around 7 p.m. this evening, Overlin was observed
leaving his hotel room and was arrested without incident. Overlin is
being held in the Ottawa, OK county jail awaiting extradition back
to Iowa.
U.S. Marshals joined the Polk County
Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation
late last week in the search for Overlin. U.S. Marshals frequently
provide assistance and expertise to other federal, state and local
law enforcement agencies in support of a wide range of
investigations. Last year, U.S. Marshals-led task forces arrested
more than 27,000 state and local fugitives on felony charges.
