Treatment Programs

Central to drug treatment is the development and implementation of programs that effectively treat addiction. Drug addiction is a complex disorder that can involve virtually every aspect of an individual's functioning in the family, at work, and in the community. Because of addiction's complexity and pervasive consequences, drug addiction treatment typically must involve many components. Some of those components focus directly on the individual's drug use. Others focus on restoring the addicted individual to productive membership in the family and society.

ONDCP Treatment Programs

Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral, and Treatment (SBIRT)
Substance abuse is one of our Nation’s most significant public health challenges. It destroys lives, undermines families, and costs hundreds of billions of dollars annually in health care, legal, workplace, and other expenses. In order to reduce the misery and addiction caused by substance abuse in the United States, the Federal government has launched an innovative new effort which will use our Nation's health care system to help diagnose and treat drug abuse before it becomes a more serious problem.

Access to Recovery (ATR)
Launched in 2003, the Access to Recovery (ATR) program provides vouchers for treatment services as well as recovery support services. For the first time, Access to Recovery expands treatment options by including faith and community-based providers. In so doing, clients can choose a treatment program best suited to meet their unique needs. Congress has appropriated $300 million in funding for ATR over three years.

Other Federal Treatment Programs

Addiction Technology Transfer Center
The Addiction Technology Transfer Center (ATTC) is a nationwide, multi-disciplinary resource that draws upon the knowledge, experience and latest work of recognized experts in the field of addictions. The ATTC Network transmits the latest knowledge, skills and attitudes of professional addiction treatment practice.

Drug Court Discretionary Grant Program (DCDG)
DCDG provides financial and technical assistance to states, state courts, local courts, units of local government, and American Indian tribal governments to develop and implement treatment drug courts that effectively integrate substance abuse treatment, mandatory drug testing, sanctions and incentives, and transitional services in a judicially supervised court setting with jurisdiction over nonviolent, substance-abusing offenders.

The Knowledge Application Program (KAP)
The Knowledge Application Program (KAP) helps coordinate the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment's (CSAT's) knowledge application activities by producing a variety of documents for both substance abuse treatment providers and clients and their families. The Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) series, Technical Assistance Publications (TAPs), treatment and training manuals for providers, and brochures and booklets about issues related to treatment for clients and their families in English, Spanish, and other languages are all produced under KAP.

National Alcohol & Drug Addiction Recovery Month
Recovery Month aims to promote the societal benefits of substance abuse treatment, laud the contributions of treatment providers and promote the message that recovery from substance abuse in all its forms is possible.

Recovery Community Services Program (RCSP)
RCSP is a grant program of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (SAMHSA-CSAT). In RCSP grant projects, peer-to-peer recovery support services are provided to help people initiate and/or sustain recovery from alcohol and drug use disorders. Some RCSP grant projects also offer support to family members of people needing, seeking, or in recovery.

Residential Substance Abuse Treatment for State Prisoners (RSAT) Program
The RSAT Formula Grant Program assists states and units of local government in developing and implementing residential substance abuse treatment programs within state and local correctional and detention facilities.

TIE - Treatment Improvement Exchange Forum
The Treatment Improvement Exchange (TIE) is a resource sponsored by the Division of State and Community Assistance of the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment to provide information exchange between CSAT staff and State and local alcohol and substance abuse agencies. The TIE Contract is funded by the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
