DETAIL OPPORTUNITY
TO SERVE AS DEPUTY GENERAL COUNSEL FOR INTERPOL

The Criminal Division is seeking an attorney for a one year detail to serve as the Deputy General Counsel for Interpol in Lyon, France.  Below is a description of the main duties of the Deputy General Counsel in the Office of Legal Affairs for Interpol in France. Reporting directly to the General Counsel, the incumbent will be directly responsible for managing the daily activities of the Office of Legal Affairs, and for managing autonomously some areas of activity. The post holder will be responsible for alerting the General Counsel on any identified legal issue in a timely manner and for proposing a pro-active legal approach for the Organization’s benefit.

The incumbent would be required to provide assistance to the General Counsel and ensure she/he receives sound legal analysis from the staff of the Office. The incumbent will be directly responsible for managing the daily activities of the Office of Legal Affairs, and for managing autonomously some areas of activity (eg. Referral Case Management System). The post holder will be responsible for alerting the General Counsel on any identified legal issue in a timely manner and for proposing a pro-active legal approach for the benefit of the Organization.

Training/Education

Experience

An applicant must have extensive experience in a high level legal advisory capacity and management experience in a public or private organization is required. Sound experience of theoretical and practice of international law, including the law of international organizations.  Possess knowledge and practice of criminal law and processing of information issues. Management experience working in an international environment would be highly desirable; either from previous employment in an international organization or from participating in e.g. international working groups, joint international projects etc.

Candidates should also possess personal and professional maturity; absolute sense of discretion; strong communication skills, both in written and oral form; service/client oriented.  Ability to work persistently and under pressure in teams as well as individually; good social specifically multicultural skills; demands initiatives, creativity (original thinking) and curiosity.  A demonstrated interest in developing and maintaining professional networks; synthesize; excellent drafting, listening and computer kills. As a minimum proficiency in standard office word-processing, spreadsheet, database and presentation software.  In addition, the ability to exploit the internet and other electronic sources for the collection of open-source information relevant to identifying legal issues would be highly desirable.
