About the Office: The threat of gangs and gang related violence has increasingly become a national, and sometimes international, problem. Instead of functioning as small, isolated groups, gangs have become more organized and their reach often crosses district, state and national borders. Gang members now have connections to other countries and are increasingly traveling to and from the U.S., bringing contraband and new gang recruits with them. The Division has identified the need to broaden its efforts in combating gang related crime. The Division’s Gang Squad has the expertise and dedication to do just that. Gang Squad prosecutors work hand-in-hand with the National Gang Targeting, Enforcement, and Coordination Center (GangTECC) and the National Gang Intelligence Center (NGIC). This combination of prosecutors, investigators and intelligence analysts comprehensively targets and coordinates multi-jurisdictional and international gang investigations and prosecutions and develops strategies to disrupt and dismantle these organizations.

Responsibilities and Opportunity Offered: The successful candidate will serve as the Deputy Chief of Gang Squad and support the Chief in the oversight, management, and day-to-day direction of a specialized group of federal prosecutors charged with developing and implementing strategies to attack the most significant national and international gangs in the United States.

The Deputy Chief:

• Supervises, oversee and coordinate the activities of attorneys in their prosecution of select gang cases of national and international importance.

• Personally handles select litigation matters.

• Supports the coordination with USAOs on legal issues and multi-district cases, and works with numerous domestic and foreign law enforcement agencies to construct effective and coordinated prevention and enforcement strategies.

• Facilitates efforts to work hand-in-hand with the National Gang Targeting, Enforcement, and Coordination Center (GangTECC) and the National Gang Intelligence Center (NGIC) and facillitates the interaction of prosecutors, investigators and intelligence analysts to comprehensively target and coordinate multi-jurisdictional and international gang investigations and prosecutions and develop strategies to disrupt and dismantle these organizations.

• Works closely with agents and analysts located at the National Gang Intelligence Center (NGIC) and the Gang Targeting, Enforcement and Coordination Center (GangTECC) to comprehensively target and coordinate multi-jurisdictional and international gang investigations and prosecutions and develop strategies to disrupt and dismantle these organizations.

• Works with the Gang Squad Chief to develop, implement, and coordinate sensitive Department strategies to dismantle significant regional, national and international gangs in the United States.

Qualifications: Excellent academic credentials, substantial expertise in criminal investigation and prosecution, including experience investigating or prosecuting gang-related matters or other complex cases, strong speaking and writing skills, sound judgment, and a demonstrated commitment to public service.

Required Qualifications: Interested applicants must possess a J.D. degree, be duly licensed and authorized to practice as an attorney under the laws of any State, territory of the United States, or the District of Columbia, and have at least five years post J.D. experience in criminal investigation and prosecution. Applicants must be an active member of the bar in good standing.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience investigating and/or prosecuting gang cases is highly desired, as is experience working in or with state and local law enforcement, and with law enforcement and intelligence communities at the Headquarters level.

In addition, the ideal candidate will—
• possess strong coordination skills, particularly with federal law enforcement agencies and other prosecutors;
• thrive on being challenged by multiple and diverse demands, and have a demonstrated ability to set priorities;
• have excellent judgment and the ability to handle highly charged issues;
• have an understanding of, and sensitivity to, the political and cross-cultural nuances inherent in working with diverse groups;
• have strong interpersonal skills with a particular emphasis on relationship and team building; and
• possess strong oral advocacy, writing, and organizational skills.

Travel: Travel will be required.

Salary Information: Current salary and years of experience determine the appropriate salary level. The pay range for a GS-15 position is $115,317 - $149,000 per annum.

Location: The position is located in Washington, DC

Relocation Expenses: Relocation expenses are not authorized.
