ASSET FORFEITURE UNIT, CIVIL DIVISION
UNITED STATES ATTORNEY’S OFFICE
EASTERN DISTRICT OF NEW YORK
BROOKLYN, NEW YORK

About the Office: The United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York (EDNY) is seeking an experienced attorney for a position as Special Assistant United States Attorney (SAUSA) in the Civil Division, Asset Forfeiture Unit, focusing on the coordination and enhancement of Suspicious Activity Report (SAR) Review Teams. As a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney, you would join one of the nation’s premier litigation offices representing the United States of America in three of New York City’s five boroughs -- Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island -- and all of Long Island, as well as the district’s surrounding waters. AUSAs and SAUSAs in the Civil Division’s Asset Forfeiture Unit are responsible for conducting and managing all aspects of asset forfeiture prosecutions, both civil and criminal. Asset forfeiture is a powerful law enforcement tool that is essential to preventing money laundering, to dismantling terrorist, drug, and violent criminal organizations, and to depriving criminals of their ill-gotten gains. The Asset Forfeiture Unit in the Eastern District of New York has gained nationwide recognition for its work in this regard.

AUSAs and SAUSAs in the Asset Forfeiture Unit assist with the investigation of the case, prepare and file pleadings, handle discovery, conduct grand jury proceedings, brief and argue motions, and conduct trials and appeals. They represent the United States in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York and in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. AUSAs and SAUSAs work closely with Special Agents of a number of federal investigative agencies in investigating a broad spectrum of criminal activity, and in locating forfeitable assets. The SAR Review Team SAUSA would also be expected to conduct outreach and to establish relationships with local law enforcement and banking institutions and to make proactive use of SAR data by coordinating a SAR Review Team, with the aim of expanding the government’s ability to investigate and prosecute money laundering in all of its forms.

The Civil Division has two offices, a main office located in Brooklyn, presently staffed by approximately 36 AUSAs and a number of Special AUSAs, and an office in the Central Islip, Long Island, staffed by 6 AUSAs and a number of Special AUSAs. The Asset Forfeiture Unit is presently staffed by 4 AUSAs and 1 SAUSA in the Brooklyn office.

Responsibilities and Opportunity Offered: The applicant selected for this position will receive a two-year appointment as a SAUSA to represent the United States, its agencies and officials in all aspects of federal forfeiture litigation relating to SARs and money laundering, from investigation through appeal. The SAR Review Team SAUSA would also be expected to conduct outreach and to establish relationships with local law enforcement and banking institutions and to make proactive use of SAR data by coordinating a SAR Review Team. If hired, the applicant’s time will be fully dedicated to asset forfeiture litigation.

Qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D. degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), possess proven research and writing abilities, superior oral and interpersonal skills and judgment, and have demonstrated initiative and capacity to function, with minimal guidance, in a highly demanding environment. Generally, applicants should have at least three years of post J.D. litigation experience.
