Responsibilities and Opportunity Offered: We are currently seeking to hire a trial attorney for the criminal division to prosecute federal firearms offenses. The position is being filled through a partnership with the Fannin County District Attorney’s Office. The candidate selected will be cross-designated as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney (SAUSA) and work in the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Sherman. Salary and benefits will be paid by Fannin County. This position is being filled on a TERM basis and is expected to last for two years. Extensions of this term for additional years or parts thereof are a possibility.

Required Qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D. degree, be licensed and authorized to practice as an attorney in the State of Texas and have at least three (3) years of post-J.D. experience. Applicants must also be active members in good standing of the bar of any jurisdiction.

Preferred Qualifications: Strong academic credentials, superior legal research and writing skills, quick analytic ability to accurately and precisely articulate critical case-related issues, courtroom experience, good interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a supportive and professional team environment with client agencies, support staff and other attorneys, and a demonstrated commitment to public service.

Travel: Occasional travel may be required.

Salary Information: Salary is administratively determined based, in part, on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The range of starting pay is $4,666 to $6,250 per month. This is a grant-funded position. Continued employment is contingent on approved funding.

About the Office: The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Texas represents the United States in all of its civil, criminal and appellate matters in the district. The Eastern District of Texas is a large district consisting of 6 staffed offices that cover 43 counties in the eastern part of the state, spanning more than 50,000 square miles from the Oklahoma border to the Gulf of Mexico. Offices are located in Sherman, Plano, Tyler, Texarkana, Beaumont and Lufkin. Our district works closely with federal agencies and law enforcement personnel located throughout the district and in the Dallas/Fort Worth and Houston metropolitan areas.

Location: The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Sherman, Texas, is located at 1800 Teague Drive, Suite 500. Sherman, a community of approximately 36,000 residents, is located astride U.S. Highway 75 and is approximately one hour’s drive north of Dallas. Sherman is home to a nationally recognized liberal arts school, Austin College, as well as several Fortune 100 industries. Sherman has a vibrant arts community and a variety of shops and restaurants. For those who enjoy the outdoors, Sherman is conveniently located just minutes away from beautiful Lake Texoma, a popular boating and fishing destination. The lake area has two state parks, fifty-four U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-managed parks, twenty-six resorts, hundreds of campgrounds and a variety of excellent golf courses. Sherman offers all of the advantages of a smaller community coupled with easy access to the urban amenities of the Dallas/Fort Worth metropolitan area.

Relocation Expenses: Relocation expenses will not be authorized.

A hiring committee will evaluate the applications and invite a limited number of applicants for an interview with the committee. Following committee interviews, applicants may be selected for additional interviews with criminal and civil division supervisors and/or the United States Attorney.
