Requesting Assistance from the USNCB

Law enforcement officials seeking access to the services of the USNCB should follow the following guidelines:

  1. The request must be in writing and come from a bona fide law enforcement agency.
    Include:  name of agency, case or reference number, name and title of point of contact, and contact information (ORI/Phone(24/7)/Fax). In urgent circumstances, the USNCB will accept an initial request via telephone, but the USNCB cannot transmit the information internationally until a written request is received. Written requests for assistance must be transmitted via the NLETSsystem to "DCINTER00", or faxed on official agency letterhead to (202) 616-8400.

    Law enforcement agencies needing to transmit files or photographs through secure channels should contact the USNCB Command Center for further instructions.

  2. Identify the crime(s) being investigated, or the criminal investigative purpose of the request (e.g., murder, narcotics trafficking, missing person, abducted/missing child, financial fraud, internet crime, fugitive, other type of routine criminal investigative requests, etc.)

  3. Indicate the type of assistance or information sought from the USNCB and foreign authorities.

  4. Indicate the international investigative aspect of the request.

  5. To the fullest extent possible, provide identifying details of the case:
    • Agency Case Number
    • Subject's full name (first, middle, last)
    • Subject's date of birth
    • Subject's place of birth
    • Subject's parents' names (mother's maiden name)
    • Subject's nationality (if applicable)
    • Subject's passport number (if available)
    • Subject's previous address in a foreign country (if available)
    • Subject's fingerprints (if available)
    • Subject's photograph (if available)
    • Description of physical characteristics and markingsOther personal identifiers.

Law Enforcement Officials may also contact the USNCB directly if they need assistance in determining whether their request meets applicable guidelines.

Please note:  The USNCB provides investigative assistance to law enforcement officials and agencies only.  Therefore, private citizens and non-law enforcement entities seeking assistance from the USNCB must first contact their local law enforcement agency and request their assistance.
