    Almost nine out of every ten jail inmates were adult males. Jail population by age and gender. 6/08

    Between 1990 and 2007, the number of white and Hispanic jail inmates increased at a similar average annual rate. The number of black inmates increased at a slower pace. Jail population by race and ethnicity. 6/08

    Blacks were almost three times more likely than Hispanics and five times more likely than whites to be in jail. Jail incarceration rates by race and ethnicity. 6/08

    Homicide rates recently declined to levels last seen in the mid-1960s . Homicide rate. 1/08

    The estimated number of arrests for drug abuse violations for adults has been increasing, while the number for juveniles stabilized. Drug arrests by age. 1/08

    After peaking in 1993, the number of gun crimes reported to police declined and then stabilized at level last seen in 1988. Crimes committed with firearms. 1/08

    The Uniform Crime Reports homicide rate has been relatively stable in recent years. Young adults age 18 to 24 experience the highest homicide rates. Homicide victimization rate. 1/08
