The U.S. Marshals enforce the
Volstead Act...on October 27, 1919, when the 18th Amendment’s
prohibition on alcoholic beverages passed over President Woodrow
Wilson’s veto. The U.S. Marshals arrested bootleggers and seized
their equipment–including cars, trucks, warehouses, and breweries.
Prohibition was repealed in 1933.
Ensuring the Vote...on October 30, 1878, Attorney General
Charles Devens, who previously served as U.S. Marshal for the
District of Massachusetts from 1850 to 1853, ordered U.S. Attorneys
throughout the South to enforce the election laws allowing all
citizens to vote. Ironically, in 1851, it was Attorney General
Devens who nearly experienced riots when he was required to return a
fugitive slave named Thomas Sims to his owner in the South. |
