Office of Legal Policy

The Office of Legal Policy (OLP) is responsible for developing and implementing the Department’s significant policy initiatives.  OLP often handles special projects that implicate the interests of multiple Department components.  In this role, OLP coordinates with all other interested Department components and with other Executive Branch agencies.  The Assistant Attorney General for Legal Policy oversees OLP and serves as the primary policy advisor to the Attorney General and the Deputy Attorney General.

OLP also works closely with the Office of Legislative Affairs to promote the Department’s policies in Congress and reviews all regulations promulgated by the Department.

Finally, OLP works with the Attorney General in advising the President on nominations for Article III judgeships.  After the President has submitted a nomination to the Senate, OLP works with the White House and the Senate Judiciary Committee in securing the nominee’s confirmation.

Elisebeth Collins Cook is the Assistant Attorney General for Legal Policy.
