National Bone Marrow Donor Registry

The National Bone Marrow Donor Registry program serves to increase the number of patients with life-threatening disorders who are eligible for bone marrow transplants from matched, biologically unrelated bone marrow donors.

PERFORMING
Moderately Effective

In general, a program rated Moderately Effective has set ambitious goals and is well-managed. Moderately Effective programs likely need to improve their efficiency or address other problems in the programs' design or management in order to achieve better results.
  • The program has a clear purpose and serves a specific need. The number of individuals who could benefit from transplant therapy is growing, including the number of minority individuals who have traditionally had difficulties locating a donor match.
  • The program has demonstrated effectiveness. It has been very successful in increasing the number of cord blood units listed in the Registry, adding 7,000 units between 2003 to 2004. It has also shown an increase in the number of donors on the Registry. In 2004, the program increased the number of potential donors to the Registry by 7.2 percent over 2003, exceeding the program's target.
  • Evidence of progress toward achieving all long-term goals is needed. The program has ambitious targets for increasing the number of blood stem cell transplants facilitated yearly, for both the general population and among minority patients, by 2010. However, the program had no data supporting its long-term goal of increasing patient survival, post transplant.

About Improvement Plans

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:

  • Determining best approach to collect comprehensive outcomes for: (1) related donor transplants and (2) other therapeutic uses of blood stem cells.
  • Implementing the Related Cord Blood Donor Demonstration Project as required under P.L. 109-129.
