Construction and Operations of Research Facilities

NSF investments provide state-of-the-art research tools, such as multi-user installations, distributed networks, accelerators, telescopes, vessels, aircraft, internet-based facilities, and earthquake simulators. NSF investments are coordinated with other agencies and countries to ensure complementarity and integration.

PERFORMING
Effective

This is the highest rating a program can achieve. Programs rated Effective set ambitious goals, achieve results, are well-managed and improve efficiency.
  • This program is effective in constructing and operating the unique research facilities of the National Science Foundation. Independent assessments find that the program provides significant access for researchers to state-of the-art scientific facilities.
  • The cost and schedule goal was originally applied to as many as 11 construction projects, and the target was set at 90% to stay within 10% of approved project plan. The goal was revised in FY 2007 to apply to only the five facilities under construction and the target was set at 100%.
