Injury Prevention and Control

Collaborating with numerous organizations and agencies, the program promotes and supports research into the causes and prevention of unintentional and violence-related injuries and to improve injury response and treatment. Priorities include falls, fires, child maltreatment, and traumatic brain injury.

PERFORMING
Moderately Effective

In general, a program rated Moderately Effective has set ambitious goals and is well-managed. Moderately Effective programs likely need to improve their efficiency or address other problems in the programs' design or management in order to achieve better results.
  • The program has a clear purpose in preventing intentional and unintentional injuries. Injuries are the leading cause of death for children and young adults in the U.S. and of years of potential life lost before age 65. In 2004, over 167,000 people died from unintentional and violence-related injuries, and more than 29 million people sustained injuries requiring emergency room treatment.
  • The program has established annual and long-term performance measures and is able to show progress in achieving yearly targets. Examples of measures include reductions in the youth homicide rate, and reduction of deaths in residential fires. The program has demonstrated improvement in these measures in recent years.
  • The program has conducted independent evaluations that are sufficient in scope and quality that, in general, conclude the program is effective and achieving results. These evaluations include rape and domestic violence prevention, fall and domestic fire prevention, and youth violence prevention.

  • Monitoring and reporting on program's progress in achieving its performance goals and efficiency measures annually.
  • Conducting annual external scientific reviews to ensure the program is effective and achieving results.
