Coast Guard Migrant Interdiction Program

The Migrant Interdiction program enforces immigration laws at sea to interdict and process illegal and undocumented migrants as far from U.S. shores as possible. The program also serves a humanitarian purpose, since the many migrants risk losing their lives by traveling on overloaded, unseaworthy and unsafe vessels.

Rating

What This Rating Means

PERFORMING
Moderately Effective

In general, a program rated Moderately Effective has set ambitious goals and is well-managed. Moderately Effective programs likely need to improve their efficiency or address other problems in the programs' design or management in order to achieve better results.
  • The program complements other immigration programs by providing maritime interdiction capability, but does not duplicate land-based efforts.
  • The Migrant Interdiction program has a mixed record at achieving its performance targets, which may be attributable, in part, to flaws in performance measurement methodology. Shortcomings in the measurement methodology are balanced by the a sufficient level of independent analysis and review of the program's performance.
  • The program contributes to financial statement auditor questions about sound financial management practices at the Coast Guard.
