Fuel Cell Education Program Resources
In addition to the eight class activities, the following resources are offered as part of this Program.
Online Fuel Cell Chalkboard
The Chalkboard is an online resource for contacting others about this Program. Even students can use this Chalkboard to contact other students, including students in Ross McCurdy's Fuel Cell class at Ponaganset High School in Rhode Island. Post questions and comments to the teachers who developed the curriculum, or other teachers who have used the curriculum. The Chalkboard can be accessed from http://www.bpa.gov/Energy/N/projects/fuel_cell/education/
Elementary School Additional Activities
In order to reinforce what your students learn about fuel cells during this Fuel Cell Education Program, they are invited to show the car kit to an elementary school class and introduce a "Fuel Cell Coloring Activity". Understandably, every student will not want to do this, but your encouragement and support for the few who are interested would be greatly appreciated.
Six lessons, tied to state standards and appropriate for 4th through 6th grade students are available for free download at: http://www.bpa.gov/Energy/N/projects/fuel_cell/education/FuelCellCar/Curriculum.cfm
Fuel Cell Coloring Activity
An Elementary School Additional Activity involves a high school student visiting an elementary school class and talking about the benefits of fuel cells, while demonstrating Activities 4 (electrolyzing hydrogen) and 6 (running the car kit on a flat surface) for the elementary school class. Finally, the high school student can pass out the "Fuel Cell Coloring Activity" sheets and talk with the students as they color the fuel cells.

Fuel Cell Field Trips
- Avista Labs
15913 E. Euclid Ave
Spokane, WA 99216
Thirty minute, hands-on tours of Avista Labs, who have developed modular, cartridge-based, proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell systems. They have a range of stationary fuel cells for emergency and back up power requirements, uninterruptible power supplies, digital power needs and a variety of off grid power requirements.

- King County Fuel Cell Demonstration Project
South Treatment Plant in Renton, Washington
1200 Monster Road S.W.
Renton, WA 98055
Tour the world's largest demonstration project of a molten carbonate (MCFC or "Direct") fuel cell using digester gas (methane) as fuel. The demonstration project will be aimed at testing the technology and the claims of high energy conversion efficiencies and low air emissions for fuel cells and is sponsored by King County's Wastewater Treatment Division, FuelCell Energy Inc., and the Office of Wastewater Management of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. - Pacific Northwest National Labs
902 Battelle Boulevard
Richland, Washington 99352
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is one of nine U.S. Department of Energy national laboratories, located in Richland, Washington. Scientists at PNNL are developing materials and techniques used to fabricate solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC). At the fuel cell labs, researchers use laser cutters, robotic arms and computational modeling to study not only the electrochemical reactions in fuel cells, but also how the electrochemical reactions interact with fuel cell design. The goal is to assemble a 60-cell stack to generate 5 kilowatts of energy. See this web-site for more information: http://science-ed.pnl.gov/
