Promoting Labor Diplomacy

The Office of International Relations has a long-term institutional relationship with the Department of State to carry out the U.S. Government's labor diplomacy function. Among other efforts, OIR works closely with State to post Foreign Service Officers (FSOs) to strategically important countries for advancing the USG's international labor agenda; assists in the preparation and training of FSOs for duty as Labor Officers (LOs) to ensure that they have the requisite knowledge and skills to effectively research and report on labor conditions and developments; and supports LOs once they are at post. The role of Labor Officer is an important one, not only in helping to advance the USG's labor policy objectives abroad, but also in providing critical support to DOL in carrying out its international responsibilities.
