Statement by U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley Regarding Education Policy Statements of National Governors' Association

I'm delighted that the nation's governors have reaffirmed their bipartisan commitment to raising standards and improving student achievement and have reiterated their support for a federal role in promoting quality education.

In two policy statements, adopted at their meeting in Puerto Rico, the governors reaffirm the state federal partnership in education. Specifically, they call on the federal government to continue to provide support for upgrading teacher skills through the Eisenhower Professional Development Program, and they recognize the value of the Goals 2000 Act in helping to support state education reform efforts. They call for a renewed focus on support for schools that serve children with the greatest need.

I will continue to work diligently with the governors toward our common vision of a nation that honors its children through investing in their future, and I hope that the same spirit of bipartisan cooperation and leadership can be restored in the U.S. Congress.
