STATEMENT BY U.S. SECRETARY OF EDUCATION RICHARD W. RILEY
Regarding the Resignation of Bilingual Education and Minority Languages Affairs Director,
Delia Pompa

Delia Pompa has been an important member of my staff for nearly four years. Together, we have worked hard to provide the highest quality bilingual education programs to the growing number of children who need them. She has been a tireless defender against efforts to limit or eliminate instructional services for limited-English-proficient children. Delia has worked diligently to improve the quality of bilingual education programs nationwide, to recruit and train high-quality teachers in the field, to reduce the dropout rate among Hispanic students, and to ensure that students whose first language is not English learn to high standards. I wish her well in her new endeavor and know that she will continue to share her knowledge and vast expertise in the area of bilingual education to benefit the children who need it most.
