Exploring the World of Snowflakes and Tracks
Michigan Science Standards Met: Reflecting on Scientific Knowledge 2 and 4

In the classroom for 30 minutes: Children will play a game to learn about the different shapes of snowflakes. They will observe mounted animal specimens and outline the foot shape of these animals.

One hour field trip at your school site or Pictured Rocks: Children will use “snowflake catchers” to observe snowflakes. They will also imitate movements of different animals making tracks in the snow.

Exploring the Forest and its Animals
Michigan Science Standards Met: Reflecting on Science 4, Classification 1 and 4

In the classroom for 30 minutes: Children will explore the idea of how to tell a plant apart from an animal. They will also explore homes or habitats and discover how these provide animals with food, water, and shelter. They will examine different animals of the forest, where they might live in the forest, and what they might eat.

One-hour field trip at your school site or Pictured Rocks: Children will explore outside for plants and animals. They will compare a field to a forest habitat to learn the differences. They will sit quietly using all their senses to try to make discoveries about the forest and report on their observations. Unique stories of the plants and animals will be shared.

Kindergarten - Fall
Seed Surprises and Scavenger Hunt

Concepts covered: awareness, comparing and contrasting, observation skills, adaptations, and identification based on observable characteristics

In the classroom for 30 minutes: Students will examine wildflower seeds and describe their different shapes.

One hour field trip at your school site or Pictured Rocks: A hike to collect seeds and see seed adaptations and needs in action!

Kindergarten - Winter
An Introduction to Snow, Ice, and Winter
Michigan Science Standards Met: Constructing New Knowledge 4, Reflecting on Science 3, Changes in Matter 1

In the classroom for one hour: Students will examine snow and ice to learn what they are and how they reshape our outdoor scene. They will also participate in activities to help them become more observant in the winter environment using their eyes and nose.

One hour snowshoe field trip at your school site or Pictured Rocks: Students will use “snowflake catchers” to observe snowflakes. They will also use hand lenses to examine similarities and differences in snow and ice. Students will use frames to look at different snow scenes, listen for the “song of winter,” and use a “magic Frisbee” to find hidden treasures under the snow!
