Center for Counseling & Development

The US Coast Guard Academy provides counseling services to all cadets throughout their tenure at the Academy. The Cadet Counselor’s role is to assist cadets in understanding personal, vocational, and/or educational concerns. Counselors provide a supportive and confidential atmosphere where any issue can be discussed, e.g., peer pressure, sexuality, concerns with parents, girlfriend/boyfriend, roommates, study skills, time management, homesickness, stress, depression, eating concerns, etc. The cadet counselors are here to help cadets with their growth and development, not merely as a cadet, but most importantly as a person. Counseling services are also offered to staff, faculty, and dependents on a time available basis.

The Center for Counseling & Development is located in the lower deck of Michel Hall (Clinic). Regular office hours are Monday thru Friday from 8am to 4:30pm (exceptions may occur). To contact the Center for Counseling & Development for information or to set up an appointment, call (860) 444-8520. If on campus, dial extension 8520.

The Center for Counseling & Development offers a variety of services to assist cadets. These services include:

  • Individual Counseling
  • Group Counseling
  • Educational Workshops (a variety of topics available by request)
  • Psychological/Vocational Evaluations (by request)
  • On-campus intranet website available 24hrs/day
    • self help brochures & links
    • additional information on services

If parents, faculty, staff members, or fellow cadets have concerns about a cadet, they should call the Center for Counseling & Development at the number listed above. Our counselors will help assess the situation and schedule a convenient appointment. In the event that a counselor is not available a message can be left and the counselor will return the call.
