EPA Training Programs

The Student Educational Employment Program has two components: the Student Temporary Employment Program and the Student Career Experience Program. Two other opportunities for students are: the Summer Employment Program and the Student Volunteer Program. Students must be at least 16 years of age, a US citizen, and seeking a degree, certificate, or diploma in an accredited school to be eligible for federal employment.

NHEERL has an active post-doctoral fellows program. Candidates will have earned a Ph.D. in health, biological, physical, or engineering sciences. Candidates with an M.D. or D.V.M. degree with experience in conducting scientific research may also be considered.

EPA has several programs that are designed to attract talented individuals with culturally diverse backgrounds such as fellowships, grants, internships and co-operative agreements, which are described below.

• The National Center for Environmental Research (NCER) operates four fellowship programs to improve educational opportunities for promising students with science and engineering backgrounds (http://es.epa.gov/ncer/; 800/490-9194).
• The National Network for Environmental Management Studies (NNEMS) is a program which sponsors research projects for students (http://www.epa.gov/enviroed/students.html; 800/358-8769).
• The Resident Research Associateship Program (RRAP) enables post-doctoral fellows and mid-career Ph.D.'s to work as visiting scientists at federal laboratories; 202/334-2670 or 202/564-0452.
• The EPA Intern Program (EIP) is a comprehensive, permanent, full-time and career development program for recent bachelors degree graduates, designed to help them develop potential for future advancement within the agency. Key developmental components of the EIP are: an Orientation Conference, a senior level agency mentor, Individual Development Plan (IDP), multiple rotational assignments, field studies and site visits; 202/401-7002.
• The Environmental Careers Organization (ECO) and EPA sponsor a diversity oriented summer internship program (http://www.eco.org/).
• The National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education (NAFEO), a cooperative agreement for students in Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU's) (http://www.nafeo.org/).
• The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) is a cooperative agreement for Hispanic Colleges and Universities (http://www.hacu.net/).
