Susceptible Subpopulations

One's age, developmental stage, and health status can make a difference in exposure and risk posed by environmental pollutants either because one is more or less exposed (vulnerability) or one has a greater or lesser biological response to exposures (susceptibility). Risk posed by environmental agents can be greater for various "life stages" such as the very young and adults over 65 years. Research is needed to understand the factors associated with the differential vulnerability and susceptibility and to develop strategies for protecting individuals during these more sensitive stages of their lives.
