GIS (Geographic Information System) is a computerized application which stores map information about things such as vegetation, rivers, elevation, cities and much more.  This GIS technology enables us to do predictive modeling of the natural landscape, project planning, research, cartography (map making), 3D rendering of the landscapes and more.

The Lincoln National Forest is composed of three Ranger Districts:  Guadalupe, Sacramento and Smokey Bear.  Each dataset available for download below links to an image preview of the data, the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) compliant metadata, a linkable dbase database which describes the data and finally the GIS compatible data itself.  The preview images and the metadata can be viewed on-line but the ArcInfo export file is designed to be used in association with GIS software such as ArcGIS and ArcView and as such must be downloaded and converted to be used with the GIS software.

For specific map information, please refer to our Recreation web pages where some of our maps (generated through GIS) are available to you.

Master Datasets:  Our master GIS datasets are those that are stored within a regionally standardized geodatabase.  These GIS 'layers' have been exported to shapefiles along with metadata and provided for you to download and use within a GIS type software program.  The data downloaded from here comprises the entire Forest and is stored in UTM13N, Nad83.

Other Downloadable Data:  Some of the more popularly requested GIS datasets not found within our master geodatabase can be found below.  These layers will be updated in the coming months.  Currently these are exported coverages and are in StatePlane, Nad27, NMCentral Zone.

List of all Data:  The Lincoln does not currently provide all of its GIS layers and data via the internet, in part due to size limitations and/or sensitivity of layers.  Click on the list of all data for just that, a comprehensive list of all of our GIS data.
