Deputy Secretary of the Interior Lynn Scarlett joined a group of fellow bird-watchers in the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 19 to survey two miles along the canal for species of birds. The Audubon Society of the District of Columbia, in conjunction with the National Park Service, organized the event as part of a larger survey  along the 184.5-mile stretch of the canal between Georgetown and Cumberland, Md.
