Establish your career with a world renowned organization!

ENTRY, MID-LEVEL, AND SENIOR ACCOUNTANT POSITIONS

ARE AVAILABLE NOW!

The Smithsonian (SI) is the world's largest museum and research organization with 6000 employees and operations in 7 states, Washington, DC and the Republic of Panama. As a Trust Instrumentality of the United States the SI holds a unique position within the Federal sector.  While we receive an annual appropriation from Congress, we also rely on fundraising from corporations, foundations and individual donors, grants for scientific research and income produced by our magazines, shops, product development and licensing, and partnerships in publishing and television production. This variety in funding sources, and public-vs-private regulatory oversight, presents interesting and challenging issues for our accounting and financial departments.

Our Accountants work with both government and non profit accounting regulations and procedures and utilize state of the art technology.

At entry levels, you will:

  • reconcile general ledger and various subsidiary accounts; and
  • prepare monthly trial balances and develop recurring financial and regulatory reports.

Upon gaining experience, you will:

  • work closely with business unit financial managers;
  • analyze financial transactions to determine the integrity of the ledger balances;
  • trouble shoot problems, develop sound business solutions; and
  • ensure the proper application of federal appropriations, gifts /grants, income from business activities or trust funds.

Candidates with significant experience may be considered for positions with higher level of responsibility at commensurate grade levels.  Senior accountants serve as financial consultants to Smithsonian Museums and Departments.  Accountants provide guidance regarding application of federal appropriations, gifts/grants, income from business activities, financial transactions that maintain the integrity of the ledger balances, and sound accounting and business solutions.  SI accountants also serve on teams established to evaluate new Government Accounting Office or FASB regulations and their application to Institution accounting policies and procedures.

Additionally, we offer promotion opportunities to GS 13 with higher grades available competitively within the Comptroller's function.

Where are the the positions located?

The Accounting Offices are located in Crystal City, VA with easy access to the Metro, restaurants and services.  If you are looking for the security of a government position and the challenges of the non profit sector wrapped up in a world renowned organization, you have found a home. The position comes with outstanding federal civil service benefits, commuter benefits, assistance in becoming a CPA or CGFM, and a wealth of training and career development opportunities.  There are no worries about mergers, acquisitions or your employer going out of business.

When will applications be accepted?

We will be accepting applications now and on a continuing basis through September 30, 2008.  However, individuals who apply early will receive first consideration as vacancies become available!
