Recycling rates are reported every two years. The latest figures are from 2005. The latest recycling figures for that year indicate that recycling and composting programs recovered 32% of municipal solid waste or 79 million tons. There are approximately 8,550 curbside recycling programs nationwide, which is down from 8,875 in 2002, however community composting programs have increased in number from 3,227 in 2002 to 3,470 in 2005.
