Printing Industry

Use this site as a guide to some information for printers on pollution prevention and complying with environmental requirements. This site and its associated links may not list all regulatory requirements that might apply to your printing facility. Keep in mind also that state and local governments may also have additional or stricter regulations than the federal government.

Massachusetts Environmental Results Program (ERP) for Printers Massachusetts was the first state to roll out an ERP, and printers was one of the first sectors included. The multimedia program focuses primarily on lithography, but also includes screen, flexo, gravure and letterpress. It replaces facility-specific permits with industry-wide environmental performance standards and annual compliance certifications. The printing industry ERP replaces the Mass Printers Partnership which began in 1996. For more information:

Printers Simplified Total Environmental Partnership (PrintSTEP) (EPA HQ)
PrintSTEP is a multi-media alternative to the traditional administration of environmental regulation and permitting. PrintSTEP is intended to simplify the process for implementing these regulations and encourage awareness of environmental requirements within the printing industry. To test the PrintSTEP concepts, EPA entered into cooperative agreements with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services, which successfully established PrintSTEP pilot programs. Find more information about PrintSTEP, including an evaluation of the pilot programs.
