Environmental Compliance and Pollution Prevention Guide for Small Quantity Generators (1998. free) - This publication was developed by the Pollution Prevention Unit of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to help small and medium sized businesses that are small quantity generators (SQG) understand environmental requirements and pollution prevention measures. An SQG refers to any business, municipality, institution or corporation that generates between 100 and 1,000 kilograms (220 to 2,200 pounds) of non-acute hazardous waste per month and stores less than 6,000 kilograms (13,200 pounds) at any time.

The EPA Manual for Waste Minimization Opportunity Assessments - (1988. $19.95) - This manual was developed by EPA's Hazardous Waste Engineering Research Laboratory, Cincinnati, OH to help businesses perform waste minimization assessments.

WasteWise Tip Sheet: Waste Prevention - (1994. Free) - defines waste prevention and gives specific examples of waste prevention opportunities available at most facilities.

WasteWise Tip Sheet: Facility Waste Assessments - (1994. free) This tip sheet describes how to conduct a waste assessment in order to determine optimal waste reduction strategies.

WasteWi$e Updates - is a technical assistance newsletter published by EPA several times a year. Each issue takes an in-depth look at a specific topic related to solid waste reduction.

Where are the Biggest Cost Savings? Looking for Waste Prevention Clues Across Business Operations (free) This fact sheet describes how to determine cost-saving waste prevention opportunities by focusing first on the products and materials used in a company's key organization operations.

Waste Prevention Pays Off: Companies Cut Waste in the Workplace - (1993. Free) This pamphlet provides a brief overview of waste prevention goals and strategies that are working for different types of organizations (includes case studies).

The Consumer Handbook for Reducing Solid Waste (1992. free) This booklet describes how people can help solve a growing problem...garbage! Individual consumers can help alleviate America's mounting trash problem by making environmentally aware decisions about everyday things like shopping and caring for the lawn.

MAT-EX - Upstate NY Materials Exchange - is managed by the GLOW Region Solid Waste Management Committee located in Batavia, NY. It is a unique opportunity for businesses to exchange unwanted/unusable products that would otherwise be discarded, and/or locate small free or inexpensive materials that can be used in daily business or operations. MAT-EX involves over 20,000 businesses in the twelve county region of Ontario, Monroe, Genesee, Livingston, Orleans, Wyoming, Erie, Allegany, Steuben, Chautauqua and the Western Finger Lakes Region.

Recycler's World - was established as a world wide trading site for information related to secondary or recyclable commodities, by-products, used & surplus items or materials.

Source Reduction Program Potential Manual: A Planning Tool (1997. free) This 27-page manual was written to help local solid waste planners determine the potential impact of various source reduction options. The manual examines program potential, or the portion of a waste stream category that could be addressed by a specific source reduction program. Analyzing program potential helps solid waste managers decide whether to include source reduction in their integrated solid waste management plans. To make it easier to calculate program potential, companion software is also available.

Programs/Projects

The Comprehensive Procurement Guideline (CPG) Program is part of EPA's continuing effort to promote the use of materials recovered from solid waste. Buying recycled-content products ensures that the materials collected in recycling programs will be used again in the manufacture of new products. The CPG program is authorized by Congress under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act and Executive Order 13101. EPA is required to designate products that are or can be made with recovered materials and to recommend practices for buying these products. Once a product is designated, federal agencies must purchase it with the highest recovered material content level practicable.

WasteWise Program is a free, voluntary, EPA program through which organizations eliminate costly municipal solid waste, benefiting their bottom line and the environment. WasteWise is a flexible program that allows partners to design their own solid waste reduction programs tailored to their needs. As a WasteWise partner, your organization can save thousands or millions of dollars by reducing, reusing or recycling solid waste materials. NYC WasteLe$$ is a comprehensive citywide waste prevention and environmental public awareness program funded by the New York City Department of Sanitation, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The program was established to help New York City businesses and organizations improve their operating efficiencies and reduce operating costs through waste prevention. NYC WasteLe$$ waste prevention teams work with owners and managers of businesses and organizations throughout the City to identify cost-saving opportunities to prevent wastes.

EPA's Waste Minimization Program promotes a long-term national effort to minimize the generation of hazardous chemicals in wastes regulated by EPA. It emphasizes source reduction and environmentally sound recycling over waste treatment and disposal. Persistent Bioaccumulative, and Toxic (PBT) Pollutant Project was established to focus further attention on reducing risks from PBTs, which are highly toxic, long-lasting substances that can build up in the food chain to levels harmful to human and ecosystem health. They include many familiar toxic substances such as mercury, PCBs, DDT - and many others not so familiar that continue to be released and linger in our environment. EPA will use a full range of tools to address PBT concerns, including pollution prevention.
